Our partnership with congregated living facilities is where it all happens. Adding trishaws and volunteers makes Miles of Smiles!
There is no cost involved in bringing this opportunity to your residents. All we ask is you provide storage space (usually a parking spot) for the trishaw so it is available for our volunteers. Miles of Smiles maintains the trishaw. We work closely with the directors on scheduling rides. All volunteers are trained and screened.
Data on getting outdoors from 2,000 residents of 40 nursing homes showed that, of those who were physically able, 32% went outdoors less than once per month, and only 22% daily. There is a paucity of data on the access to and use of outdoor areas in nursing homes (Clark et al., 2013).
Activity Directors just have to say yes.
AS a nursing home or other older adult community
We are looking forward to learning of your interest in offering trishaw rides from your facility.
For more information and guidance on next steps, please email us and we will be back to you shortly.
Know that Miles of Smiles Colorado will be with you each step of the process – funding, cyclist and other volunteer recruitment, organizing, ordering and final assembly of your trishaw, initial training, and follow-up calls and visits from Miles of Smiles Colorado volunteers.
"The cyclists who take us out are just the nicest people I've met in a very long time."
New trishaw experience locations are possible. We just expanded to our second Durango location through one person's desire to make a difference for the residents at a rehabilitation-nursing facility.
MoS will make it happen. We provide the trishaw, the training, and volunteers.
Happy Resident
